Malaspina's Cowichan Campus hosts Open House May 10

April 10, 2007 - 5:00pm

“Opening doors for you.”

That’s the theme of Malaspina University-College’s first annual Open House at the Cowichan Campus Thursday, May 10, from 4 to 7 pm.

“We’re inviting community partners, the public, and prospective students to come and see what the Cowichan Campus has to offer,” said Maureen McGillivray, program assistant for Credit Programs and one of the Open House organizers. “It’s our way of building awareness about all the great things taking place here. We encourage everyone to bring friends and family.”

Open House activities will include displays and demonstrations in Culinary Arts, Carpentry, Anthropology, Creative Writing, English, Media Studies and other program areas. There will be poetry readings, an expresso bar, science experiments, music and free draws. Faculty members, students and alumni will meet and greet visitors and be available to discuss courses and programs, degree requirements and future options at the Cowichan Campus.

“One of the main purposes of the Open House is to show the community that whether you’re upgrading to Grade 12, gaining new skills for work, obtaining the first two years towards a university degree, learning new computer skills, exploring your own potential, or taking steps towards a career change, the Cowichan Campus is the place to start,” said Interim principal Maria Lauridsen.

“Malaspina’s Cowichan Campus has launched a lot of successful careers,” added Lauridsen. “The personalized attention students receive at our small, friendly campus helps them succeed, whether they are taking trades training or working towards a degree.”

Malaspina’s Cowichan Campus has offered services and educational opportunities to the community since 1951, when night school classes began at Cowichan Secondary School. Malaspina established its first office on Evans Street in Duncan in 1975, and classrooms were added in 1978 for day-time use only.

In 1979, Malaspina opened a campus in Cowichan to recognize its commitment to the region. Huge program expansion occurred between 1980 and 1986, and a new campus was built at 222 Cowichan Way in 1987, with space for classrooms, a science and health lab, bookstore, and service wing including the cafeteria, student services, registration and administration.

A second building completed in 1989 provided space for a library, computer labs, classrooms and offices. In the past 10 years, Malaspina has rented over 20 different locations in the community to house additional programs. Plans are currently under development for relocation of the Cowichan Campus.
