Malaspina’s summer session is quickly approaching

March 3, 2004 - 4:00pm

Registration is underway for summer session courses at Malaspina University-College.

“We’re offering more than 85 university credit courses in a wide range of subjects between May and August,” said Sheila Cooper, Program Coordinator for Malaspina’s Centre for Continuing Studies.

Traditional university credit courses in arts and sciences will be offered, along with a number of “different or unusual courses” in film, acting, introductory jazz, and art history for non-art students.

“The summer session is a great opportunity for current or new Malaspina students to pursue their academic studies in a relaxed campus atmosphere,” said Cooper. “Some of the summer session courses are being offered for the first time.”

Students currently attending Malaspina may register for summer classes now, while new students may register as of March 15.

Classes begin May 3 to June 18 (seven weeks), June 21 to August 6 (seven weeks) and May 3 to August 6 (14 weeks).

“Most summer courses are accelerated, which means they are completed in seven instead of the usual 14 weeks,” explained Cooper.  “That’s about half the time it takes to complete a normal three credit university course during a regular fall or spring semester."

Due to the intensive nature of the courses, students are allowed to take a maximum of three courses for each seven-week session.

Accelerated courses typically appeal to post-secondary students at Malaspina or from other institutions who want to earn additional university credits during the summer months.

Recent high school graduates, semi-retired individuals or people who work part-time may also be interested in summer classes, said Cooper.

“If you’ve been out of the post-secondary education system for a while and are thinking about returning to school in the fall, taking a summer session course is a good way to ease back into academic life,” said Cooper. “For recent high school graduates, it’s a great way to get a jump on your fall studies.”

The summer session is the perfect time to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere on campus and familiarize yourself with all the amenities Malaspina has to offer, Cooper added. Students will have access to the library, gymnasium and other facilities.

Summer session courses fill up quickly, so Cooper encourages students to register early to avoid disappointment.
